Choosing the right educational path for your child is an important decision. Kasson-Mantorville School District is here to support you in ensuring your homeschool meets all Minnesota state and district requirements.

State Compliance and Reporting Requirements

In accordance with Minnesota’s Compulsory Instruction statutes (sections 120A.22, 120A.24, and 120A.26), homeschool administrators must submit specific student information and instructor qualifications to their resident public school superintendent by October 1 of each year. This includes the name, birthdate, and address of each student ages 7–17. You must also reach an agreement with the superintendent on a nationally normed achievement test each year.

To fulfill these requirements, you are required to fully complete and return ONE of the following two forms to the district office:

1. First-Year or Newly Relocated Homeschools

If you have recently moved into the district or are starting a homeschool for the first time, you must file an Initial Registration Form for Unaccredited Schools.

  • Get the Form: You can pick up a physical copy at the K-M District Office, or download it online via the Minnesota Department of Education Nonpublic and Homeschools Page. (Navigate to: Students and Families → School Choice → Nonpublic and Homeschools).

  • Timeline: Submit within 15 days of withdrawing from a public school, moving into the district, or by October 1 of the first year your child is homeschooled after reaching age 7.

2. Returning Homeschools

If you are continuing your established homeschool within the district, you must submit the form linked below.

Important Household Updates

  • No longer homeschooling? If you no longer have children in your household participating in homeschooling, please notify our office so we can remove you from future mailings.

  • Go Green: If you received this information via a mailed hard copy, please email your current email address to k.petersen@komets.k12.mn.us. Moving forward, all district homeschool communications will be sent electronically.

Deadlines and Required Documentation

Please return your completed homeschool forms and required vaccination records (or an official immunization exemption form for students entering Kindergarten, 7th grade, and 12th grade) as soon as possible, but no later than September 15.

Document Maintenance Law

Per Minnesota Statutes, sections 120A.22 and 120A.24, instructors do not need to submit daily calendars or report cards to the superintendent. However, state law requires instructors to maintain comprehensive records on:

  • Curriculum and instructional materials

  • All required annual and supplemental testing

  • Proof of test administration and official scores

Important Record Keeping Note: This documentation must be submitted to the public school if your child enrolls as a public school student. It must also be provided to the county attorney if requested during an educational neglect investigation.

Nonpublic Pupil Aids and Reimbursements

Homeschools may elect to receive Aids to Nonpublic Students. To request this financial aid, you must submit Form # ED-01650-38 (Student Report for Aids to Nonpublic Students) to the K-M school district by September 15.

Receipts and Reimbursement Guidelines

When submitting items for reimbursement, please attach eligible receipts for costs and clearly include:

  • Book name and author

  • ISBN numbers

  • Any other pertinent item details

Note: Per Statute 123B.42, eligible receipts must only include items purchased between July 1 and June 30 of the active school year in which they are used.

Allotment Rates for the 2026-2027 School Year

The authorized rates of entitlement per eligible pupil for district allotments are as follows:

  • Textbooks, Standardized Tests, & Instructional Materials: $138.43

  • Pupil Health Services: $89.75

  • Secondary Pupil Guidance and Counseling Services: $376.69
